What is Hygge (HOO-ga)?

Highlands in WNC Magazine

Happiness:  It’s the one thing most of us could use a little more of. But how do you get it?

Three basic concepts are needed; first, once our basic needs are met, it is more important to focus on purpose and meaningful relationships rather than wealth. Second, it is not about things – it is about an atmosphere. Third, it is not a regime where you do things a certain way – it is actually about giving yourself a break from everyday demands.  Hygge is about embracing the simple pleasures that make life great!

This term “hygge” translates to “coziness” or “togetherness” and originates from Denmark –also known as the happiest country in the world. The latest trend in relation and happiness has not only swept the nation, but has also made its way into the office at Highlands Cove Realty.

There are many small things that can be done to achieve the act of hygge, including:  burning candles, sharing a meal with a friend, curling up with a warm blanket, and even reading a book. Practiving hygge is about slwing down and taking a moment for yourself several times a day.

One way to bring hygge in a community setting is to host a potluck, share a meal that has been provided by many people, so, we did just that here in the office! As a team we hosted a St. Patrick’s Day potluck where everyone gathered and enjoyed all the different meals that were made. Taking an hour out of our day to share a meal and catch up on each others lives made for a really nice afternoon.

Though it can be tough to find time to slow down during our day, having a planned event provided the perfect hygge setting. We continue to hygge in the office by hosting a potluck each month!

Highlands, NC was recently named one of the Best Small Towns in Western North Carolina in the January/February 2016 edition of WNC Magazine. Read the full article here.

Highlands Cashiers Players:  Don’t Cry For Me Margaret Mitchell

This hysterically funny play depicts an actual event in Hollywood, 1939. Movie producer David O. Selznick has purchased movie rights to the blockbuster novel “Gone With the Wind.” A production deadline is looming, but Selznick fires the director, burns previous scripts, hires Victor Fleming to direct, and the two literally kidnap legendary screen writer Ben Hecht (who has never read the book), and lock all three in an office for a 7-day ordeal to produce an acceptable script. The rest, they say, is history.

James Gregory – The Funniest Man in America

James Gregory creates an evening of non-stop laughter with a wry sense of the absurd, a Southern accent and universal story-telling. The ridiculous, the common and sometimes even the simplest events all become hilarious in the hands of this master storyteller and world-class comedian. James'success, like his comedy, is the direct result of the values he grew up with. It is this unique brand of humor that packs the crowds into his sold-out shows. The absence of vulgarity sets James apart and his stories are carefully crafted art. "I have lived long enough to know people, know life," Gregory reflects. "My comedy is based on my life experiences. It's real, it's funny and the audience loves it. That's why I'm still in business."
